Youth Hub Privacy Statement
The University of Michigan recognizes and values the privacy of the university community members and its guests, and strives to be the leaders and best in the ways in which we manage your personal information. This value is best reflected in Regent’s Bylaw Sec. 14.07. Privacy and Access to Information, which states in part:
“In collecting, utilizing, and releasing information about individuals associated with the university, the university will strive to protect individual privacy, to use the information only for the purpose for which it was collected, and to inform individuals of the personal information about them that is being collected, used, or released.”
This privacy statement outlines the information we may collect, how we use it, how we protect it, and how you can elect to change your privacy settings related to the Youth Hub.
This scope of this statement applies to our practices for gathering and disseminating information related to Youth Hub (“the platform”), and activities related to gathering information for the marketplace of opportunities featured in Youth Hub.
At the University of Michigan Center for Educational Outreach (CEO), we strive to appropriately manage, secure and keep private and confidential the data entrusted to us. We are committed to creating a secure and safe online environment and we take your privacy very seriously. We seek to protect the privacy of children and youth, and we actively take precautions to ensure that any and all information is utilized in an appropriate manner.
What type of information do we collect
We collect information we receive from you or your child, including information that is automatically collected and information that is voluntarily provided to us. Information that is voluntarily provided includes personal identification information, such as name, address, phone number, and other contact or demographic information (e.g., sex, race/ethnicity, and birthdate). Additionally, information about your child’s educational experience may also be collected when completing applications or registrations for opportunities on Youth Hub, such as grade in school, school(s) attended, measures of academic achievement (e.g. GPA, test scores, and grades), personal essays, etc.
Automated Data Collection
During a user visit to Youth Hub, certain information about the visit is automatically collected and stored, including:
- The Internet domain from which a visitor accesses the website
- The IP address assigned to the visitor’s computer
- The type of browser the visitor is using
- The date and time of visit
Information You Provide
In addition, Youth Hub also asks site visitors to voluntarily provide personally identifiable information, such as a name, address, phone number, etc. Information is voluntarily provided by you will generally only be used for the indicated purpose and we have security measures in place on this site to protect personal information.
How this information is used
Youth Hub collects information about users that allows the university to monitor website performance, make improvements to site navigation and content, and better market U-M opportunities for children, youth, and other audiences.
In addition, the University collects personal information provided by site visitors in order to monitor the use of this website and to make improvements. This data may be shared with partners in order to enhance the functionality of this website.
With whom will this information be shared
The University of Michigan does not sell or rent personal information provided through Youth Hub. Information is shared within the university by those using the platform. We may share personal information in limited circumstances, such as with service providers that support business activities (ex: services that support student recruitment). We require our service providers to keep your personal information secure. We do not allow our service providers to use or share your personal information for any purpose other than providing services on our behalf. We may also share personal information when required by law, or we believe sharing will help to protect the safety, property, or rights of the University, members of the University community, and University guests.
What choices you can make about your information
You may have choices about the various ways we collect, use, and share your personal information. You may contact us by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or mail to opt-out of using the platform or to change your preferences. Please be sure to include your full name, the email address/username associated with your account, and a description of your request. Please allow sufficient time for your preferences to be processed.
How is the information secured
The university recognizes the importance of maintaining the security of the information it collects and maintains, and endeavors to protect information from unauthorized access. The university strives to ensure reasonable security measures are in place, including physical, administrative, and technical safeguards to protect your personal information. If we learn of a data security incident that may compromise your personal information, then we will attempt to notify you electronically so that you can take appropriate protective steps.
Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act
Children’s privacy and safety are very important to us. For this reason, children under the age of 13 will not knowingly be permitted to create an account on Youth Hub. Minors from 13-18 are permitted to create an account, but they are required to identify a parent or guardian who will also be associated and have access to the child’s account. We seek to use any information provided to improve our programs and services and we do not sell information to external parties. Privacy Statement Changes This privacy statement may be updated from time to time. We will post the date our Statement was last updated at the top of this Privacy Statement. Please note that other University of Michigan websites may adopt different privacy practices as their needs vary. Use of Youth Hub is subject to all applicable state and federal laws, as well as general University policies.
