Planetarium Shows
The Sky Tonight: Star Talk
Location: University of Michigan Exhibit Museum
Bright stars, constellations, planets, and telescopic objects in the current night sky will be discussed in this live "star talk." Then leave Earth and "fly" out into space to examine the planets in the current sky. More information is available on the UM Exhibit Museum website.

MarsQuest
Location: University of Michigan Exhibit Museum
With recorded narration by Patrick Stewart, MarsQuest chronicles humanity's cultural and scientific fascination with the planet Mars, from early observations of its "canals" to stories like War of the Worlds. Spacecraft mission findings are used to compare Mars’ weather, climate, and geology to Earth’s. We learn where on Earth we can prepare to live on Mars, what will be needed to get crewed missions there, and what the first landing may be like. Rick Dalton, CEO and President, College for Every Student - "Helping Underserved Students Gain Access to College"
Location: University of Michigan, School of Education - Tribute Room
Rick Dalton, CFES founder, president, and CEO, oversees all CFES programs. Dalton has spent the last 24 years increasing opportunities for at-risk youth through school-college engagement. While serving as director of enrollment planning at Middlebury College, he created a partnership with a Bronx school that helped launch and strengthen more than 100 school-college partnerships. Shaun Harper, Assistant Professor of Higher Education, University of Pennsylvania - "Beyond Barriers: Black Male College Access, Adjustment, and Achievement"
Location: University of Michigan, Michigan Union - Parker Room
Shaun Harper is on the faculty in the Higher Education Division at the University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Education. He also holds an appointment in the Center for Africana Studies at Penn. Harper maintains an active research agenda that examines racism and gender disparities in American higher education, Black male college access and achievement, and college student engagement. The Michigan Pre-College and Youth Outreach Conference
Location: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
The Michigan Pre-College and Youth Outreach Conference is a one-day conference that brings together leaders in education, workforce development, and government across Michigan to engage with other professionals interested in strengthening support for pre-college and youth development programming, and college access in Michigan. The 2009 conference "Developing Michigan's Future Leaders: Pathways to College Access and Excellence" will take place on Monday, November 16, 2009 at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Laura Perna, Associate Professor of Higher Education, University of Pennsylvania - "Understanding the Roles of Academic Preparation, Financial Resources, and Information in the College Enrollment of Underrepresented Students"
Location: University of Michigan, Rackham Graduate School - Assembly Hall
Laura Perna's scholarship uses an integrated theoretical approach and a variety of analytic techniques to understand the ways that public policies, social structures, and individual characteristics separately and together enable and restrict the ability of women, racial/ethnic minorities, and individuals of lower socioeconomic status to obtain the economic, social, and political opportunities that are associated with two aspects of higher education: access as a student and employment as a faculty member. Shirley Ort, Associate Provost and Director, Office Scholarships and Student Aid, UNC - Chapel Hill - "The Carolina Covenant: Promise and Platform for Student Success"
Location: School of Education – Tribute Room
Since 1997, Shirley A. Ort has served as associate provost and director of scholarships and student aid at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she administers a comprehensive program of $240 million in student aid to 15,500 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. Prior to this appointment, she served as deputy director for student financial aid at the Washington State Higher Education Coordinating Board for 18 years. Ms. Ort has held numerous leadership roles in state and national professional associations within student financial aid and higher education administration. Dr. Caroline Sotello Viernes Turner, Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, Arizona State University - "From Farm Labor to Academic Labor"
Location: University of Michigan, School of Education - Tribute Room
Caroline Turner's research and teaching interests include access, equity and leadership in higher education, faculty gender and racial/ethnic diversity, organizational change, and the use of qualitative methods for policy research. Her publications include a book entitled Diversifying the Faculty: A Guidebook for Search Committees, which is widely adopted selling over 15,000 copies nationally and internationally, a co-authored book entitled Faculty of Color in Academe: Bittersweet Success, and a co-edited book, Understanding Minority-Serving Institutions. 2009-2010 University Musical Society Youth Education Program
Location: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
The University Musical Society (UMS) has one of the largest K-12 education initiatives in the State of Michigan, dedicated to making world-class performance opportunities and professional development activities available to K-12 students and educators. This season's programs celebrate cultural ethnicity and artistic diversity. They foster critical thinking, cultural literacy, and empathetic communication in students, helping them to respect themselves and others, and to recognize their unique gifts in the 21st century. Guided Tours and more
Location: Exhibit Museum - University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Docents work with students using observation and inquiry, and incorporate hands-on artifacts and specimens. Students participate in learning activities within the galleries. Activities may include close observation, comparison and contrast, movement, and exhibit critiques. For more information, please visit the U-M Exhibit Museum website.
