College Corps

College Corps

The purpose of the University of Michigan College Corps project is to prepare high school students for postsecondary education. The Center for Educational Outreach, in partnership with Project Community, a service-learning program housed in the Ginsberg Center at the University of Michigan, will utilize undergraduate students to participate in an academic enrichment and college awareness project at Inkster High School.

UM undergraduates enrolled in the CEO section of the Project Community course during the Fall 2009 and Winter 2010 semesters will be considered College Corps members. These College Corps members will support high school students academically by providing tutoring and academic advising/mentoring services. College Corps members will tutor high school students in content areas as well as study skills. In consult with the Inkster High School guidance office and the UM Office of Undergraduate Admissions, they will also provide advice, mentoring, and encouragement regarding following a college preparatory curriculum.

College Corps members will also present a comprehensive college awareness curriculum including but not limited to personal and academic goal setting, career exploration, college terminology, searching for colleges, the college application process, financial aid and scholarship resources, and following college preparation timelines. Additionally, College Corps members will focus on instilling in the high school students the importance of a college education, the opportunities a college education can provide and, most importantly, the belief that a college education is absolutely an achievable goal.
